Western High Earn Hours

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The purpose of the Service Learning Graduation Requirement and the Student Volunteer Service Program is to acquaint high school students with the need to become participating agents of change by providing service to both their school and community.  Service Learning and Volunteer Service Program is divided into three tiers, Service Learning Hours required for graduation, Service Learning and Volunteer Service Hours required to qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars Program, and Volunteer Service hours required to earn a silver cord at graduation.  Please contact Mrs. Nolan at the main campus to receive information about student volunteer opportunities, to document volunteer hours, and to begin volunteering.

To ask about volunteer opportunities, receive a log sheet to document hours spent volunteering, and to begin volunteer work, contact Mrs. Nolan, Service Learning Coordinator at Western High School.

For further volunteer sites refer to the website:

Tier 1- The Service Learning Graduation Requirement

Service Hours: All students are required to do 40 hours of community service if they are working toward the 24 credit diploma. All seniors must also turn in a reflection paper prior to May 1, 2004. The reflection paper should be one page in length and should to reflect on the service they have preformed. Any questions concerning service hours and/or the refection paper should be directed to Mrs. Nolan in room 312.

Tier 2-Florida Academic Scholars (part of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarships)

Seventy-five (75) documented hours of service is one of the qualifications for the Florida Academic Scholars Program (Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program).  These hours could include a combination of the Service Learning required hours and hours earned for the Student Volunteer Service Program.

Tier 3-The Student Volunteer Service Program

All students who have earned a total of 250 Volunteer Service Hours (100 of which must be earned during the senior year) will receive a silver cord to wear at commencement.  An adjustment to the 250 total hours required to receive a silver cord should be made for students who enter the Broward County Public Schools after their freshmen year.
