Report

Boundaries:  Western High School was placed in the Boundary Process by the School Board.  Cypress Bay High School is critically overcrowded and this situation must be addressed.  The School Board capped Cypress’ enrollment to Western on 10/16 meaning that any student who goes to enroll at Cypress this remaining school year will be enrolled at Western.

The School Board is also in the process of creating the boundaries for the new high school, West Broward, f/k/a LLL.  The new boundaries will give relief to Cypress also.

There are three scenarios that the School Board will be looking at during the Board Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, February 5th, at 12:30 p.m., at the KCW Building.  None of these scenarios have any students moving from Western to South Plantation.  You can look at these scenarios by going to [ http://www.browardschools.com/ ]www.browardschools.com, click on “School Board”, then on “E-agenda” at the bottom left and then on “MEETINGS” at the top left.  The Workshop is open to the public but the public may not speak.  The Public Hearings are scheduled for February 26th and 27h, and March 25th and 26th.  The Public Hearings will be held at Plantation High School.  Two votes are required for boundaries.

Western’s 36-room addition and Improvements to Core:  A 36-room addition has been funded for Western.  The contract should be signed by the end of February and we anticipate that the building will be completed about a year after that.  Two of the proposed boundary changes have students moving into Western for the 2008-2009 school year.

New High School MMM:  The District is still in the process of performing their due diligence on the two properties which were selected by the Site Committee.  Once Mr. Notter receives all of the information, he will make his recommendation to the School Board at a regularly scheduled Board Meeting.  The School Board will then make their decision.  The meeting will be noticed seven days in advance.  Mr. Notter has stated that it will not be on the February 12th School Board Meeting Agenda.

Homework Policy:  The District is looking at the Homework Policy and met today in a Workshop to discuss it.  You can see the proposed changes by repeating the above process and looking for today’s meetings and then clicking on “Table of Contents” or contact me and I will forward it to you.

High School Council:  The High School Council is meeting on Thursday, February 7th at Plantation High School.  The discussion will be Val/Sal.  All parents of high school students and incoming middle school students are invited to attend and are welcome to participate in the discussion.

Area Advisory Council:  The next Area Advisory Council meeting will be on Wednesday, February 20th, at South Plantation High School.  We will be having a presentation on the parent portal for BEEP.

Second Open House:  The second Open House for Western is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, January 31st, at 6:30 p.m.
