BCAA ALL-STAR SOCCER
Wilson, Dayes help lead South's sweep of North in final games

FORT LAUDERDALE · Denise Wilson's breakaway goal with 2:35 remaining lifted the South to a 4-3 victory over the North Thursday night in the eighth BCAA All-Star girls' soccer game at Lockhart Stadium.

"It feels awesome to win my last high school game," said Wilson, who scored 11 goals for Miramar (4-13-1) this season. "We may not have played in a state championship game this year, but it is cool to come to the stadium where they played states and win it there."

Wilson took a long clearing pass from Cypress Bay's Kristen Lorow, took one touch and slid it past Coral Springs High School goalkeeper Ali Green for the winner.

"I just saw this as a chance to play with some awesome players and show what I could do" said Wilson, who has signed a national letter-of-intent with Louisiana Tech. "We never had a winning season while I was at Miramar, but we were close. We tried hard and were one of the fittest teams, but this makes up for that. It was a lot of fun."

The South took a 3-0 lead in the first 25 minutes as Alicia Calvert (South Plantation), Christina Gent (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Samantha Mowatt (St. Thomas Aquinas) scored. The South pulled within 3-2, getting goals from Debbie Costa (Douglas) and Caitlin Coyle (Coconut Creek). Coyle, who was named the MVP for the North, scored with 45 seconds remaining in the half.

The North tied it with 10:29 remaining on a goal by Jamila Mathieu (Coral Springs). However, the South, led by MVP Allison Cucinotta (Western) and two solid saves by Stephanie Cuneo (Everglades) in the closing minutes, rallied for its first victory in two years.

Dayes lifts South boys

South Plantation's Peter Dayes said he was looking to get noticed. Considering he doesn't play on a club team and his high school team finished last (4-13-2) in the five-team District 10-6A race, he is still waiting to get a scholarship.

His goal with 35 seconds left in the first half was the difference as the South boys made it a sweep over the North with a 1-0 rain-soaked victory. Cooper City goalkeeper Evan Lieberman made six saves for the shutout.

"This is the best thing to ever happen to me in soccer in my whole life," Dayes said. "It is tremendous. Maybe a coach liked what he saw tonight and I can get a scholarship. I was anxious the first time I shot, but the second time, I took my time."

Dayes, who had missed from five yards out minutes earlier when he shot over the goal, followed up a long shot by South Broward's Matt Mosca that bounced off Northeast goalkeeper Sam Vincent's hands. Dayes then knocked it into goal.
